Café Glacé

Not only is it National Hot Dog Month, but it's also National Ice Cream Month. And, once again, there's a legendary association between the frozen treat and St. Louis — the alleged birthplace of the ice cream cone.

But just as the waffle cone bucked the status quo for ice cream consumption in 1904, ice cream cakes — particularly those produced by St. Louis' own Café Glacé — offer a decidedly original alternative to the everyday scoop-in-a-bowl.

Classically trained pastry chef Peter Abrams worked and studied all over the world before returning to St. Louis to open Café Glacé. His desire is to share the elegant and tasty world of deluxe ice cream cakes with an American market long deprived of a common European luxury.

Café Glacé's delicate offerings are a far cry from what you might get a Dairy Queen or Baskin-Robbins; selections include exotic concoctions such as Lavender & Plum, Cassis & Mango, Chocolate Covered Apricot and Mint Chocolate Macaroon. Each 9-inch cake serves 12 to 16. Prices range from $43 to $48 per cake. Check out their entire menu at www.cafeglace.com.
