August 29th, 2008 edition of The Daily Sauce: Food and Wine. Visit Our Food and Wine Archive. School Rules! Few teachers have inspired you as much as Karen McVicker. “Knowledge is power,” she said – and you listened. Then again, McVicker does lead one of the coolest free things in St. Louis: Cicero’s Beer School. Each Wednesday for 12 weeks, students gather at The Loop restaurant to sample several beers and learn a little something from some big-time experts. For instance, when the next round of classes begins Sept. 10, the guest will be Timothy Suprise, founder of Michigan’s Arcadia Brewing Co. Students also can win prizes, stay after class for specials and earn extra credit. And it doesn’t matter whether you know an ordinary bitter from one that’s extra special – everyone’s welcome at beer school. McVicker does ask one thing of her students, though: “Do your best to drink without prejudice.” Great teachers open minds, don’t they?
