White Peaches

Big, fat, juicy yellow peaches are good, but we always reach for white peaches, especially the demure and delicious Saturn peach (aka doughnut peach). Bite into a perfectly ripe white peach, and you’ll taste pure aromatic, floral sweetness. Compliments of Mother Earth News, here are 10 reasons to eat a donut peach.

  • They taste better than other peaches; they’re sweeter, with almond overtones.

  • They’re lower in acid than other peaches.

  • Saturn pits don’t cling to the flesh, making them easy to pop out with your thumb.

  • A doughnut peach’s thin skin has little or no fuzz, so no peeling necessary.

  • Their small size makes them easy to eat out of hand.

  • The trees they grow on are frost-hardy, highly pest- and disease-resistant and are easy to grow in most areas.

  • Saturn peach trees produce an abundant harvest, up to twice as many peaches as other varieties.

  • Doughnut trees bloom earlier in the spring than other varieties, putting on a spectacular show of pink blossoms.

  • Most of the nursery stock is grafted to dwarf roots, making easy work of pruning and harvesting.

  • By planting a rarer variety of peach, you help preserve biodiversity and maintain diverse seed stocks for generations to come.
