Breaking Bread The only thing more enticing than a fresh-baked baguette and a bottle of wine is a gadget that lets you enjoy both anywhere, any time. The main attraction of the Batard Folding Picnic Knife is the 5½ inch serrated bread blade that folds safely into its own handle. But there’s a nifty bonus inside that handle – a corkscrew that compels you to throw a bottle of wine in that picnic basket as well. The Batard – which also works great on cheeses, meats and other foods – is the “brainchild” of baker Charles van Over, author of The Best Bread Ever and a self-described “stickler” for slicing instead of tearing bread. After “wondering why a bread knife could not be made into a folding knife,” van Over took a rough design to legendary cutlery company Lamson & Goodnow, and voila, the Batard was born. Now that’s a blessed event. Sauce pick: Batard Folding Picnic Knife Price: $20.95 Where to get it: Kitchen Conservatory, 8021 Clayton Road, Clayton Info: 314.862.2665 or www.kitchenconservatory.com |
