August 21st, 2008 edition of The Daily Sauce: Food and Wine. Visit Our Food and Wine Archive. Fountain Flower Tea We didn’t quite make it to Beijing for the Olympics. However, we did get a taste of Beijing at The Fountain on Locust, housed in the beautifully restored Stutz Bearcat showroom located on Locust Street’s historic Automotive Row. In addition to serving great ice cream (Cedar Crest of Wisconsin), sandwiches, salads, soups (try the peanut soup!), chocolates and a huge selection of ice cream cocktails, this eclectic eatery offers a tea “ceremony” worthy of a gold medal. A large bud of hand-rolled tea, about the size of a walnut, sits in a small snifter, which is then filled with hot water poured from an ancient-looking copper teapot with a 4-foot long spout. But that’s only part of the show. As the tea steeps, watch the tea ball bloom, revealing its hidden treasure as it unfolds from a green bud to a flower with pink petals and a white stamen that pops out at the end. While sipping on the delicately perfumed tea (green tea, lily blossoms, jasmine flowers and osmanthus), ask owner Joy Grdnic Christensen how she acquired the four unusual copper and brass teapots after visiting China a few years back. It’s a story worth repeating.
