Growing Community Gardens

Those of us who spend our spare time – or at least a portion of it – working in a community garden, stooped over pulling weeds and tilling soil, love it come harvest time. Nothing beats fresh-pulled lettuce, just-picked tomatoes or a new zuch fresh from the ground. But starting and sustaining a community garden takes more than the desire for fresh, local produce. Tomorrow, Gateway Greening of St. Louis will host a day-long workshop titled Growing Community Gardens. You’ll learn how to organize a community garden project, grow sustainable crops and compost all that garden waste. There’ll be lectures, a tour of an actual community garden and plenty of opportunities to get your hands dirty. The workshop is sponsored by Missouri Sustainable Agriculture Program, a project of the extension offices of Lincoln University and the University of Missouri.
