Emack & Bolios on Grand

A hand-lettered sign in the window announced the new Emack & Bolio’s ice cream store on the corner of Arsenal and Grand. Odd name, we thought. Turns out that self-described hippie and Boston lawyer Robert Rook founded the first shop in 1975 – three years before two other hippies, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, started making ice cream. Representing big rock bands allowed Rook to do lots of pro-bono social justice work, including working with homeless clients. Two of them, Emack and Bolio, asked to have the little shop named after them. And, thus, a franchise was born.

With 25 stores in seven states, the South Grand shop is the newest, and second Missouri location (Springfield being the first). While the super premium ice cream, yogurts, sorbets and sherbets are made back east, E&B’s outrageous, creative flavors taste great. We went crazy with a big dip of Cookie Monster (cookie dough ice cream mixed with Oreo cookies) in a Fruity Pebbles dipped waffle cone. Glenn Hughes (of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath fame) created Deep Purple Cow, a concoction of black raspberry ice cream with white and dark chocolate chips, and what a wild trip it was!
