A Tasty Souvenir

Can’t a guy just go on vacation and not think about work? Not if you’re Jim Fiala, owner-chef of Liluma in the Central West End, The Crossing in Clayton and Acero in Maplewood. Last month, Fiala and his family vacationed in Puerto Rico, his first trip to the tropical island since working there early in his culinary career. While there, the Fialas explored the world of empanadillas – those delicious little stuffed puff pastry turnovers – in the island’s many neighborhoods. Like a good vacationer, he brought back gifts: several recipes for the tasty, savory pastries that are now featured as appetizers at Liluma. His personal favorites are the shrimp or lobster-stuffed empanadillas, but a variety of fillings are available on a rotating basis. Sure beats bringing us a cheap T-shirt.
