A Pound for the Cure

Maybe you ran or walked in the Race for the Cure a couple weeks ago. Maybe you have been touched personally by breast cancer. Maybe you sometimes feel frustrated, wishing you could do more to support people and research. Dale and Marilyn Schotte, the brother-sister team behind Park Avenue Coffee in Lafayette Square, are with you. Their mom, Evelyn, is almost near that key five-year survival mark. To honor Evelyn and celebrate her inspiration, the coffee house teamed up with local Chauvin Coffee roasters to create Evelyn’s Blend, a distinctive blend of Dale’s two favorite coffees: Kenya and Sumatra. Each coffee is dark-roasted individually and then blended, making for a more balanced brew.

We brewed a couple of pots of the coffee-for-a-cause and loved the combination of the Kenya’s rich, winy acidity and the earthy sweetness of the Sumatra. A dark roast is perfect for this blend, making for a superbly smooth cup o’ joe. Best of all, it’s available all year, and $5 of every bag sold is donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Oh, and don’t forget a slice of one of Marilyn’s 64 flavors of gooey butter cake!
